Tragedy at the Fair.

Peninsula Clarion · August 23, 2009 · Reported by Joseph Robertia

The Peninsula Clarion reported that nine-year-old Mathias “Matti” Martin was fatally injured while attending to livestock at the Kenai Peninsula State Fair in Ninilchik on August 21, 2009.

The report described Matti as an experienced farm kid who had grown up around livestock at Diamond M Ranch. After the accident, fairgoers and off-duty emergency responders immediately came to help before Matti was flown to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.

The story also documented the Martin family's decision to donate tissue, their reliance on faith and community, and the way Matti's 4-H family rallied around his unfinished Junior Market Livestock chicken project.

At the auction, Matti's chickens were sold first. Community members and businesses continued adding donations after the winning bid, turning the moment into an early expression of the support that surrounded the Martin family.
